01/19 Hello class, I'm looking forward to working with all of you in the coming semester!
The purpose of this course is not only to introduce the students to the web design process, but also to help the students explore their ideas for the web-based contents and create properly functional web site. The course will provide a foundation to understand online design through the practical application of developing a web presence. Topics such as site planning, concept development, web typography, web page-layout, basic methods of construction will be covered. As the primary application used in this class, Adobe Dreamweaver will be introduced through hands on tutorials. Some essential techniques of building a website including creating CSS page-layout, adding multimedia, using Spry framework and etc. will be introduced to help the students accomplish their final project -building a personal online portfolio, or business website in Adobe Dreamweaver.
This course focuses on developing web-based multimedia materials that contain sound, graphic, animation, and interactive components. The entire class can be divided into two sections. In the first section, the fundamental elements of multimedia such as time, space, audio and motion will be discussed in class. The hands-on tutorials are designed to help students build their basic technical skills in using Adobe Flash. In the second section, the class concentrates on more web-based issues including web navigation, interactive components and etc. All those topics will be introduced through studying a sample site. Each lesson, a certain part of the sample site will be analyzed and rebuilt. At the end of the class, students will apply those skills learned from the sample site to their website in Flash. This course is designed to expand your thinking about animation, interaction, and multimedia projects.
Computer Illustration course is focused on creating vector-based illustration and Adobe Illustrator CS4 is the primary application that we will work with. The entire course has 4 stages: first, we begin with playing some basic visual elements such as lines, curves, shapes and patterns. Symbols, patterns, brushes and different shape tool will be covered. Then we move on to the pen tool which is called the king of the Illustrator CS4. Students will explore more about the concept, composition and color schemes through their design for a three-piece series of postal stamps. Some techniques such as overlapping paths, layer, gradient pathfinder and clipping mask will be covered in this stage. When students get used to work in Illustrator CS4, we will move on to the third stage in which students will create an illustration based on a realistic object. The gradient mesh and blend tool will be introduced. In the last stage, students will be asked to customize an illustration based on a certain purpose.
The Introduction to Graphic Design course intends to provide a platform on which students can “play” with visuals and text through conceptual thinking. Typography, image, space, color, and form will be integrated as the term progresses. It is a working studio class and through case studies, demonstrations and hands on demos students will learn how to apply the basic design theories to the different fields of graphic design, including logo and stationery, layout, poster, package design and etc. It also helps students develop the skills to solve visual problems using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign CS4.
In the Advanced Graphic Design class, we focus on developing further conceptual thinking and problem solving skills through the real world projects. All the projects introduced in this course come from the organizations and institutions of the communities, or other departments of our school. In order to give students as much design experiences as possible, we try to keep the projects diverse, which cover logo design, brochure, newsletter, poster and etc. Through the whole semester, students usually design 4-5 projects, either working individually or as a team. Each project usually takes a few rounds to complete, and several client meetings are set up during the working process to help the students get feedback directly. This course also provides the opportunities for the senior graphic design students to have some nice pieces for their portfolio.
As an instructor in visual arts, I'm dedicated to the development and actualization of the creative potential of students. When teaching students to use design language, I use practical instructions in design that possess real world applicability. Meaning-making is always the focus in my classroom over the principles of art and design. These approaches empower students to better understand visual expression in diverse forms and realize the vast potential of art beyond mere techniques and media. It's my responsibility to guide students as they find their own method of experimental investigation. I value all students' experiences during their creative process, both failures and successes.

Design has taken me for many years. Yet, it’s still an intriguing domain that has been attracting me to explore further. In my professional world, design is a process by which businesses can create value and market demand through innovation. In my inner world, however, design is a means of making the complex clear, whether by improving functions or improving communication. Transforming the complexity into clarity in a unique way is always a drive stimulates me to dive into the design sea.
With all the world before me, I search out only my things—the things that express my feelings and reveal new ways to intensify the subject of my design work. I believe that a good design work should go beyond pleasing the public at the moment. It is something that society is willing to accept. I also believe that a good designer should both follow and lead. I follow my instinct and lead the preference of my audience. Focusing on the future, I’m willing to develop my potentials in the fields of interactive design and digital video. My ultimate goal is to be a good educator and an explorer in digital media.
